Safe Arrival
We arrived in Trieste on Tuesday the 9/24 about 6:00 in the evening. This was 20 hours after our departure from San Francisco.
Airline travel is about as fun as a root canal can be a little challenging. We arrived in Frankfurt with plenty of time to catch our flight to Venice, 2 hours to spare. Well, kind of... we didn't anticipate having to wait for a bus to shuttle us to our new departure gate. There were hundreds of us waiting for buses, yes that's right, busses, to shuttle us to connecting flights in different terminals. We waited in a cue that rivaled Space Mountain at Christmas break that I like to think of as the "testy travelers club". An hour later we arrived at a new terminal only to find ourselves in the same sized customs cue. After customs approval, with only minutes to spare we ran, carry ons in tow, from gate A1 to gate A68. Heads up to my fellow seniors... after a certain age probably 20, running through a terminal, luggage and old age flab bouncing behind you, creates quite a spectical. I would strongly suggest rethinking this course of action. We created a picture too many innocent bystanders will never be able to unsee.
Finally got to the gate gasping for air and frantically searching for the nearest defibrillator and were told to hurry up and board. We just made it! As we got to the end of the embarkation ramp, we saw that they were loading us onto a bus! We were then shuttled back to the exact location we left two hours prior.
It's time to question the notion that Germany has the most efficient travel systems in the world.
Got to Venice. Experienced easy transfers to the train station. Arrive in Trieste two and a half hours later, extremely sleep deprived and ready for bed. So of course, we went out for quite a few drinks and appetizers.
Four hours later we were buzzed and tucked into bed and put a close to day one of our Italy vacation.
